The museum commemorates the victims of the German Nazi extermination camp Kulmhof - the first camp in which the Germans applied the mass extermination of the Jewish population. The camp operated in Chełmno on the Ner and in the nearby Rzuchów Forest.
The museum consists of two parts: in the Rzuchów Forest (cemetery grounds, monument, Wall of Memory, lapidarium, museum pavilion) and in Chełmno on the Ner (the ruins of the palace and the archaeological research area, museum pavilion).
The Kulmhof camp was the first German extermination centre, operating from December 1941. It is estimated that around 200,000 people were murdered there, mainly Jews from the Litzmannstadt Ghetto and the surrounding area.
