The Museum of Prisoner-of-War Camps in Żagań commemorates the prisoners of the German camps operating in the vicinity of Żagań during the Second World War, including the famous Stalag Luft III.

Location and surroundings

The museum is located in Żagań at 45 Lotników Alianckich Street, in the Lubusz Voivodeship, on the grounds of the former POW camps.

History

In May 1942 Stalag Luft III was established - a Luftwaffe POW camp for Allied air force officers. On the night of 24 to 25 March 1944, one of the most famous prisoner escapes of the Second World War took place here (the "Great Escape") - 80 prisoners got beyond the camp wires through an underground tunnel.

What to see

The main building with screenings of documentary films and a replica of barrack no. 104. Guided tours are possible.
