The memorial site commemorates the victims of the German Soldau camp (Durchgangslager Soldau), which operated in Działdowo from 1939 to 1945. The camp was a place of extermination of prisoners of war, teachers, officials and clergy.
The grounds of the former camp are located in the area of the former barracks of the 32nd Infantry Regiment on Grunwaldzka Street in Działdowo, about 500 m from the town centre, near the railway station, Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship.
In the autumn of 1939 the Germans established a camp in Działdowo, which bore various names (including the transit camp Durchgangslager Soldau). It is estimated that around 12,000-15,000 people died in the camp, and about 30,000 prisoners passed through the facility. The monument commemorating the victims, by the Olsztyn sculptor Ryszard Wachowski, was unveiled in 1965.
