Pawiak Prison Museum

The museum commemorates the largest German political prison in occupied Poland, operating from 1939 to 1944. According to historians' estimates, around 100,000 people passed through Pawiak, of whom about 37,000 were shot in mass executions in Warsaw and its surroundings, while over 60,000 were deported to concentration camps and labour camps.

History

The museum was opened on 28 November 1965 on the initiative of former Pawiak prisoners. It was rebuilt on the preserved underground foundations of the cells of wards VII and VIII. Since 1990 it has been a branch of the Museum of Independence in Warsaw.

Exhibition

The site includes reconstructed prison cells, the Pawiak Tree Monument, symbolic sculptures and an obelisk. The museum maintains extensive files documenting the prisoners.
