Zamość Rotunda

The Rotunda was built between 1825 and 1831 as an artillery element of the Zamość Fortress. Between 19 June 1940 and July 1944, the Germans established here a transit camp of the security police (Gefangenen Durchgangslager der Sicherheitspolizei), a site of mass executions and extermination of the population of the Zamość region. It is estimated that around 8,000 people died here, and around 50,000 passed through the camp.

Museum

The Museum of the Martyrdom of the Zamość Region was established in 1947. Exhibitions dedicated to groups of prisoners (teachers, priests, scouts, children) were arranged in the cells of the rotunda. A cemetery for the victims of German repression was created around the walls.
