On 14 June 1940 the first transport of 728 Polish political prisoners set off from the prison in Tarnów to KL Auschwitz. To commemorate this deportation, since 2006 14 June has been observed as the National Day of Remembrance of the Victims of the German Nazi Concentration and Extermination Camps. On 14 June 1975 a monument by Otto Schier, commemorating the first transport, was unveiled in front of the building of the former mikveh in Tarnów.
