Museum of Stalag I B Hohenstein

Stalag I B Hohenstein was a prisoner-of-war camp near Olsztynek (in the area of the village of Królikowo), one of the largest in the former East Prussia (approx. 35 ha, over 120 barracks). The camp operated from 1939 to 1945; around 250,000 prisoners passed through it (mainly French, Soviet, Polish and Italian), and about 55,000 people died. Since 2015 the Multimedia Museum of Stalag I B and the History of Olsztynek has been in operation.

Commemoration

In 1963 a monument (designed by Ryszard Wachowski) was unveiled depicting a prisoner trying to escape through barbed wire; the camp is also commemorated by a stone monument and plaques in four languages along the PTTK trail.
