The monument is located on Free Poland Square in Gdynia, near the Gdynia Stocznia SKM station. It commemorates the victims of the massacre of workers in December 1970. On 17 December 1970, by the viaduct near the SKM station, the army and militia fired on workers on their way to work - according to official figures, 18 people died in Gdynia at that time. The construction of the monument was one of the demands of those striking in August 1980.
