The monument commemorates the entry of the First Cadre Company into Kielce on 12 August 1914, as well as the battles of the Polish Legions in the years 1914-1918. The monument was designed by Prof. Jan Raszka; it was unveiled on 2 October 1938 and destroyed in September 1939. The rebuilt monument was blessed by Pope John Paul II on 3 June 1991, and unveiled and consecrated on 11 August 1991.
