The former residence of Polish kings, one of the most important museums and monuments in Poland.
The castle rises on Wawel Hill above the Vistula in Kraków, next to Wawel Cathedral.
Wawel was the seat of Poland's rulers for centuries. The Renaissance castle was built in the 16th century during the reign of Sigismund I the Old. Today it is a national cultural institution and the State Art Collection.
The castle holds a precious collection of paintings, prints, sculptures, tapestries (the famous arras tapestries of Sigismund Augustus), goldsmith's works, militaria, porcelain and furniture, as well as the largest collection of Oriental tents in Europe.
