Karkonosze Museum in Jelenia Góra

The Karkonosze Museum is a cultural institution of the Lower Silesian Voivodeship, presenting the history, culture and heritage of the Karkonosze-Izera region and the Jelenia Góra Valley. It is among the oldest museums in Lower Silesia.

History

The museum was founded in 1888-1889 by the German Riesengebirgsverein (Giant Mountains Association). The present building, designed by architect Karl Grosser, was opened in 1914. After 1945 the institution came under Polish administration, and in 2001 it received its current name.

The collection comprises over 60,000 objects (more than 30,000 inventory items) in the fields of archaeology, ethnography, history and art. The museum holds the largest collection of art glass in Poland (assembled since 1964), as well as paintings, prints and pewter ware.
