Alf Kowalski Museum of the Międzyrzecz Region

The museum is set on a 6-hectare parkland area between the Obra and Paklica rivers. The first exhibition opened on 18 March 1946. Its patron is Alf Kowalski, who collected coffin portraits and heraldic plaques and became the institution's director in 1947.

Coffin portraits

The collection of coffin portraits, inscription plaques, and heraldic plaques from the 17th and 18th centuries is the largest, most valuable, and most interesting collection of this type in Poland - it numbers 220 objects. The coffin portrait was a unique phenomenon of European art, connected exclusively with the funeral rites of the nobility in the former Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth.
