Abbots' Palace in Oliwa

Location and surroundings

A former residence of the Cistercian abbots, located in the Gdańsk district of Oliwa, in the Adam Mickiewicz Park. Address: ul. Cystersów 18. Currently the Modern Art Branch of the National Museum in Gdańsk.

History

The oldest, eastern wing (the Old Abbots' Palace) dates from the 15th century. Construction of the southern wing began in 1637, and the rebuilding of 1754-1756, on the initiative of Abbot Jacek Rybiński, gave it Rococo features. The palace burned down in 1945 and was rebuilt between 1958 and 1965, becoming the seat of part of the National Museum.
