The museum is housed in the former Gorzeński Palace in Śmiełów - a Neoclassical residence built in 1797 to a design by Stanisław Zawadzki. Built on a horseshoe plan, the building has a monumental Ionic portico and Neo-Palladian arcaded galleries.
Since 1972 the palace has been administered by the National Museum in Poznań, which established here the Adam Mickiewicz Museum - a branch of the MNP. Paintings, sculptures, prints and craft works connected with the poet have been gathered here. The residence is surrounded by a landscape park.
