Ruins of the royal castle in Olsztyn near Częstochowa

One of the most recognisable Jurassic strongholds on the Trail of the Eagles' Nests, with a characteristic cylindrical tower about 35 m high, built of white limestone and topped with brown brick.

Location and surroundings

The castle rises on limestone rocks above the village of Olsztyn in Częstochowa County, among the picturesque outcrops of the Kraków-Częstochowa Upland.

History

The castle was founded on the rocks as early as the second half of the 13th century as part of the defensive system of Lesser Poland on the Silesian side. During the reign of Casimir the Great it was significantly expanded.

What to see

The cylindrical tower, fragments of the walls and the extensive grounds of the stronghold. The site has been open to visitors again since 1 April 2024.
