Krzyżtopór Castle in Ujazd

One of the largest ruins in Europe of a fortified aristocratic residence of the palazzo in fortezza type, combining a palatial function with a defensive one.

Location and surroundings

The castle is located in the village of Ujazd, in the Iwaniska municipality, in Opatów County, in the south of the Świętokrzyskie Voivodeship.

History

The castle was built by Krzysztof Ossoliński (1587-1645), Voivode of Sandomierz. Construction was carried out between 1631 and 1644 (begun probably around 1621). In 1770, during the Bar Confederation, the castle, defended by the confederates, was captured and destroyed by Russian troops. In the following centuries it fell into ruin.
