A historic royal castle from the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries, towering over the town of Chęciny near Kielce, preserved as a permanent ruin.
The castle rises on a limestone hill above Chęciny in the Kielce district, in the Świętokrzyskie Mountains.
Construction of the stronghold began at the end of the 13th century; the castle certainly existed in 1306, when Władysław Łokietek granted it to the bishop of Kraków, Jan Muskata, and took it back a year later. Casimir the Great expanded the castle into a mighty royal fortress. In 1607 the castle was burned by Zebrzydowski's forces, in 1657 it was destroyed by Rákóczi's troops, and in 1707 it suffered again during the wars with the Swedes. Between 2013 and 2015 a revitalisation was carried out, securing the site as a permanent ruin.
