Picturesque ruins of a brick Gothic castle above the Vistula valley, the former main residence of the Dukes of Masovia, a symbol of Masovia's past glory.
The castle lies in Czersk near Góra Kalwaria (Piaseczno district), on an escarpment above the Vistula valley, on the site of a former early-medieval stronghold.
In the 11th century there was a wooden stronghold here, the main centre of the Czersk region. In the 14th century Duke Janusz I ordered the construction of a masonry castle, built between 1388 and 1410; it was one of the duke's most important residences, and he died here on 8 December 1429. In the 16th century Sigismund I the Old granted the castle to Queen Bona, who raised the towers. The stronghold's decline was hastened by the Swedish wars in the 17th century. From 1904 the ruins have been under conservation protection.
