Castle in Iłża

Ruins of a Gothic-Renaissance castle of the bishops of Kraków, with a characteristic round tower, towering over the town of Iłża.

Location and surroundings

The castle rises on a hill above Iłża in the Radom district, in the southern part of the Masovian Voivodeship.

History

The castle was probably built between 1326 and 1347 on the initiative of the bishop of Kraków, Jan Grot. The upper castle was erected on a plan resembling a heart - one of the few such fortress forms in Poland - with a cobbled courtyard of about 5,000 m². In the following centuries the site fell into ruin.
