Castle in Janowiec

Ruins of a Renaissance castle on a high Vistula escarpment, with picturesque views of the Vistula valley, partly rebuilt and serving a museum function.

Location and surroundings

The castle is located in Janowiec on the Vistula, in the Puławy district, on a high escarpment above the Vistula valley (coordinates approx. 51°19'28"N 21°53'36"E).

History

Construction of the castle was begun in 1508 by Mikołaj Firlej of the Lewart coat of arms; it was continued by his son Piotr Firlej. Between 1565 and 1585 the Italian architect Santi Gucci carried out a rebuilding in the late-Renaissance and Mannerist style. The castle was the seat of the Firlej, Tarło and Lubomirski families. In 1656 it burned down during the Swedish invasion and was subsequently rebuilt, among others by Tylman van Gameren. From 1975 it remained under the Vistula Museum; since 2025 it has been managed by the Castle Museum in Janowiec.
