Bolków Castle

A Gothic castle with a characteristic prow-shaped (wedge) tower, towering over the town of Bolków in Lower Silesia.

Location and surroundings

The castle rises on a hill above the town of Bolków in the Jawor district, in the region of the Kaczawa Mountains.

History

The first mention of the castle dates back to 1277. The creation of the Gothic castle is linked to the reign of Duke Bolko I, who surrounded it with defensive walls. The stronghold belonged to the Dukes of Świdnica and Jawor (Bolko I and Bolko II), who expanded it. In 1646, during the Thirty Years' War, the Swedes captured the castle, causing significant damage. In 1703 the site was bought by the Cistercians from Krzeszów, and after the secularisation of the order in 1810 it passed under Prussian administration and began to fall into ruin.
