Rabsztyn Castle

Partly reconstructed ruins of a Gothic castle on a rock, on the Trail of the Eagles' Nests near Olkusz. The name comes from the German Rabstein - Raven's Rock.

Location and surroundings

The castle lies in Rabsztyn near Olkusz, in the Olkusz district, on a rocky elevation of the Kraków-Częstochowa Upland.

History

Its origins date back to the 13th century, when the first wooden watchtower was built; in the 14th century a stone stronghold was erected in its place, later expanded into a mighty castle. In the 16th century the castle took on a Renaissance character, and its owners (including the Boner and Zebrzydowski families) took care of its development. In the 17th century, during the Swedish Deluge, the stronghold was destroyed and gradually fell into ruin.

What to see
