Ruins of the Teutonic castle in Toruń

The earliest Teutonic castle in the Chełmno Land, built on an unusual horseshoe plan, located within Toruń's Old Town (inscribed on the UNESCO list).

Location and surroundings

The ruins are located on ul. Przedzamcze, on the edge of Toruń's Old Town complex.

History

Construction of the castle probably began after 1236, after Toruń was moved to its present location; it was the first masonry stronghold in the Chełmno Land. The castle represented an early form in the development of Teutonic castles, before the typical conventual castle became established. In 1454, during the anti-Teutonic uprising that began the Thirteen Years' War, the townsfolk captured the castle, blew up the main tower and began demolishing the walls.

What to see

The castle courtyard, the underground vaults and the so-called gdanisko (a knightly latrine). Permanent and temporary exhibitions are on display, including an archaeological exhibition, an armoury and a model of the castle.
