Ruins of the Teutonic castle in Świecie

The remains of one of the few water castles in medieval Europe, located in the fork of the Vistula and Wda rivers.

Location and surroundings

The ruins lie in Świecie (Świecie district), in the fork of the Vistula and Wda rivers.

History

Around 1335 the Teutonic Knights began building the castle on a regular square plan with a side of about 50 m, with four wings around the courtyard and four corner turrets. In 1655 the Swedish general Henrik Horn captured the castle and set it on fire. After the Second Northern War the stronghold passed into the hands of Jan Jabłonowski, and in the following centuries it fell into ruin.
