Castle in Szymbark

Ruins of a 14th-century castle of the Pomesanian Chapter, one of the largest Gothic castle complexes in Poland, picturesquely situated by a lake.

Location and surroundings

The castle is located in the village of Szymbark (Iława municipality, Iława district), on an elevation above a lake, on the site of a former Prussian stronghold.

History

The castle was built in the second half of the 14th century as the seat of the Pomesanian Chapter, later transformed into a family residence. In 1946 the site was burned by the Red Army; mainly the defensive walls with gates, turrets and a bridge, as well as traces of residential buildings, have survived.
