Location and surroundings

The castle lies in Stare Drawsko (Czaplinek municipality, Drawsko County) on an isthmus between lakes, in the Drawsko Lake District.

History

The castle was built between 1360 and 1366 as a stronghold of the Knights Hospitaller, on the site of a destroyed 12th-century Slavic settlement of the Drawianie tribe. Earlier these lands belonged to the Templars, and after the dissolution of the order in 1312 they were taken over by the Margraves of Brandenburg, and from 1345 by the Knights Hospitaller. The structure was built of fieldstone and brick on a rectangular plan of about 41 x 46.5 m, with defensive walls 2.5 m thick. The ruins were entered in the register of monuments in 1959.
