Remains of a fortified castle built by order of Casimir the Great, located on a hill in the Warta valley.

Location and surroundings

The ruins are located in Koło (Koło County), on a small hill in the valley of the Warta River, formerly known as the castle in Gozdów.

History

The castle was built by order of Casimir the Great after 1365, to protect the road from Greater Poland towards Łęczyca through the Warta valley. The royal castle belonged to the Koło starosty and for about 200 years served defensive and administrative functions. After being abandoned by the starosts, the structure fell into ruin.

What to see

The western line of the defensive wall, fragments of the northern wall, and the corner tower (bergfried) with a current height of up to about 17 m.
