Ruins of the castle in Bolesławiec on the Prosna

Ruins of a defensive castle with a preserved tall octagonal tower, located above the Prosna valley, considered probably the first defensive structure of Casimir the Great.

Location and surroundings

The ruins are located in Bolesławiec in Wieruszów County (Łódź Voivodeship), on an artificial hill about 9 m high, on the western bank of the Prosna.

History

The masonry castle was built by Casimir the Great presumably as early as before 1340, at the beginning of his reign - it is considered probably the first defensive structure of this ruler. It defended access to Greater Poland from the side of Silesia. At the beginning of the 17th century the castle was rebuilt by Kacper Denhoff. It suffered during the Thirty Years' War (1642), and in 1704 the Swedes burned the castle buildings and blew up the western section of the wall; the structure was not rebuilt and fell into ruin.

What to see

The free-standing octagonal tower about 22 m high, the lower parts of the perimeter walls, the stone foundations of the gate tower, and traces of the water-filled moat.

Who it is for
