Castle Hill in Rajgród

A hill with the remains of a former defensive complex by a lake, one of the oldest stronghold centres of Podlasie, today a viewpoint.

Location and surroundings

Castle Hill is located in Rajgród (Grajewo County), in the north-eastern part of the Podlasie Voivodeship, by Lake Rajgrodzkie.

History

In the Middle Ages there was a defensive stronghold of the Yotvingians here. In 1360 Casimir the Great ordered the construction of a castle in Rajgród, which, however - according to accounts - was not completed, as a Teutonic raid prevented it. After 1571, when the locality became the seat of a starost, a fortified manor house of the starost was erected in the western part of the complex.
