Ruins of Świny Castle

Ruins of one of the oldest castles in Lower Silesia, located in the village of Świny near Bolków, on a hill above the valley. The first mention of the stronghold comes from 1108 (as Zvini in Polonia in the chronicle of Cosmas).

History

Originally a ducal stronghold, in the 13th century it passed into the hands of knights - the Świnka family (Schweinichen), who inhabited it until the 18th century. The masonry residential and defensive tower was built in the mid-14th century. The castle was most greatly expanded by Johann Sigismund von Schweinichen (1614-1660), who turned it into a Renaissance residence. In 1762 it was plundered by Russian troops during the Seven Years' War, and a fire in 1876 consumed the interiors.

Architecture

The dominant feature is the four-storey residential and defensive tower with massive walls about 2.5 m thick, with a Gothic portal, built of brownish-red conglomerate. The complex is surrounded by fortifications with bastioned towers and a bastion, as well as cellars.

Seasonality and hours
