Ruins of Cisy Castle

A picturesque ruin of a medieval castle located about 5 km west of Świebodzice, near the village of Cieszów. The first mention comes from 1242 (considered a forgery).

History

The castle was presumably built by Bolko I the Strict in the 13th century, and expanded by his grandson Bolko II of Świdnica. It guarded a trade route and the eastern border of the Duchy of Jawor. Burned in 1634 by the Swedes during the Thirty Years' War. Conservation works were carried out from the 19th century, the last securing in 1961.

Architecture

The castle is on a quadrangular plan measuring about 22 x 28 m, built mainly of sandstone. It had a defensive wall with buttresses at the corners, an internal residential building, and a keep about 10 m in diameter in the south-eastern corner; it was surrounded by an outer wall and outer baileys.
