Ruins of Wleń Castle (Lenno)

Ruins considered the oldest masonry castle in Poland, located on Castle Hill (383 m above sea level) above the Bóbr valley, near the village of Wleński Gródek.

History

The masonry castle was built by Duke Bolesław the Tall at the end of the 12th century, on the site of an earlier wooden and earthen stronghold (raised in 1108 to the rank of a castellany). Expansions took place in the 13th-14th centuries (under Bolko II the Small) and in 1567-1574. During the Thirty Years' War it was besieged several times; in 1646 it was blown up on the order of General Montecuccoli.

Architecture

Originally a perimeter wall and a hexagonal tower; later a round tower was added (12 m in diameter, walls up to 3 m thick), a chapel and residential buildings.
