Chojnik Castle (ruins)

Ruins of a Gothic castle on the summit of Mount Chojnik (627 m above sea level) in the Karkonosze Mountains, within the boundaries of the Karkonosze National Park, in the area of Jelenia Góra-Sobieszów.

History

The masonry castle was built in the 1350s; the first written mention dates from 1364. From 1419 it was the property of the Schaffgotsch family. Expanded in the 15th century (northern wing) and modernized in the 16th century in connection with the development of firearms. In 1675 lightning caused a fire that destroyed the upper castle and the tower - the building fell into ruin and was never rebuilt.

Today

A tourist attraction since the Romantic era (19th century). The PTTK mountain hut "Na Zamku Chojnik" operates here, and since 1991 international crossbow tournaments have been held.
