Ruins of Bolczów Castle

Ruins of a castle in the Rudawy Janowickie, about 15 km from Jelenia Góra, near Janowice Wielkie. The building made use of two granite rocks connected by walls.

History

Construction began in 1375; the original builder was Clericus Bolcze, a courtier of Duke Bolko II. The castle was destroyed in the first half of the 15th century during the conflict of the Hussites with the towns, rebuilt in 1517-1518 with Renaissance features under the direction of Hans Dippold von Burghaus. In 1537-1543 it belonged to Justus Decjusz, secretary of the Polish king. In 1645 the Swedes captured and burned the buildings, after which the castle remained a ruin.

Architecture

Three main parts are preserved: the medieval castle, the 15th-century part, and the 16th-century part with the walls of the barbican, the bastions and the entrance gate; originally a square tower, a residential house, a chapel and a kitchen.
