Ruins of Melsztyn Castle

Majestic ruins of a castle above the Dunajec River, in the village of Melsztyn (Zakliczyn municipality). Founded by the Kraków castellan Spycimir Leliwita after acquiring the land in 1347.

History

Successive owners took the surname Melsztyński. In 1511 the estate was sold to Mikołaj Jordan (Renaissance expansion in the 16th century), later belonging to the Zborowski, Tarło and Lanckoroński families. In 1771 it was seized by the Bar Confederates and set on fire by the Cossacks - it has been in ruin ever since. In 1879 Karol Lanckoroński undertook stabilisation works.

Architecture

The main element was a five-storey defensive-residential tower measuring 10.5 x 15 m, built of stone and brick; three of its walls have survived, with fragments of Gothic/Renaissance stone framing. To the east of the tower are the remains of a residential building, a masonry cistern and defensive walls.
