Tenczyn Castle (ruins)

Extensive castle ruins on a volcanic cone (about 398-401 m above sea level) in Rudno, about 24 km west of Kraków, in the Tenczyn Landscape Park.

History

The masonry castle was built between 1331 and 1361 on the initiative of the Kraków voivode Andrzej of the Topór family (the Tęczyński family); earlier (around 1319) there was a wooden building of Nawój of Morawica here. Thorough Renaissance rebuilding took place between 1579 and 1593. The castle was damaged during the Swedish Deluge in 1656, and a fire in 1768 led to its gradual ruin.

Architecture

Gothic and Renaissance styles; three wings open to the west with Renaissance attics, cornices and galleries. Surviving elements: the Nawój Tower, bastions, chapel, and barbican at the entrance.

Practical information

Accessibility

The castle was reopened to visitors in July 2016 after conservation works by the Krzeszowice municipality; tourism is managed by the New Era Art foundation. The site is listed in the register of monuments (no. A-12 of 9 April 1968).
