Lipowiec Castle (ruins)

Ruins of the castle of the Kraków bishops on a wooded hill above Wygiełzów (Babice municipality), in the Lipowiec nature reserve. The characteristic tall, white tower dominates the surroundings.

History

A stronghold of the Kraków bishops from the 13th century - initially a wooden fortified settlement with a stone tower, later a Gothic defensive castle. It guarded the Kraków-Silesia trade route. It also housed a prison for clergy.

Architecture

A typical Gothic upland castle, built mainly of stone. The complex: an upper castle with four wings around a courtyard, a foregate and an outer ward with outbuildings. A four-storey round tower (about 30 m high) and a well over 24 m deep.

Accessibility

The castle functions as a museum site managed by the Vistula Ethnographic Park in Wygiełzów (open-air museum). It is possible to climb the tower, which has a viewpoint.
