Ruins of the Castle in Czchów (the Tower)

Ruins of a royal castle with a characteristic cylindrical tower on a hill (about 310 m above sea level) above the Dunajec River, in Czchów, by the Nowy Sącz-Tarnów road.

History

The castle was built in the 14th century as an expansion of an older Romanesque defensive tower from the 13th century; its origins date back to the reign of Wenceslaus II of Bohemia. It served as a watchtower with a customs chamber, controlling the trade route through the Dunajec valley to Hungary.

Architecture

The oldest element is the free-standing cylindrical stone tower (the Czchów Tower), over 12 m in diameter and about 20 m high. In 2018 the gate tower was partially reconstructed with a wooden platform, the perimeter walls were raised and the surviving part of the Gothic house was made legible.
