Castle in Smoleń (Pilcza)

Ruins of a castle on Castle Hill in a nature reserve in the Kraków-Częstochowa Upland, in the village of Smoleń (Pilica municipality). Part of the Trail of the Eagles' Nests.

History

The castle was probably erected in the mid-14th century by Otto of Pilcza, on the site of an earlier wooden structure. The first reliable mention dates from 1394. For about 200 years (from 1414) it was in the hands of the Leliwita family; in 1577 it was acquired by Wojciech Padniewski. Destroyed by the Swedes in 1655, and around 1797 dismantled by the Austrians for building material.

Architecture

Three phases: an upper castle with a cylindrical tower (7.5 m in diameter), an eastern lower castle with a pentagonal wall, and a western part (after 1450). A well about 26 m deep.

Practical information

Accessibility

The monument has been under protection since 1932. After renovation works it was opened to visitors in 2015, with access to the tower.
