Ruins of the Castle in Bochotnica

The ruins of a medieval castle in Bochotnica (Kazimierz Dolny commune), picturesquely set in the loess landscape of the Land of Loess Gorges. Commonly known as "Esterka's Castle".

History

A Gothic brick-and-stone stronghold erected after 1340, probably by the ancestors of the Firlej family following the Tatar invasions. For about 150 years it served as a knightly seat and administrative centre; it was expanded in the 15th-16th centuries (from a defensive structure into an early Renaissance residence). From the 17th century onwards it was destroyed by wars and by the sliding of the loess slope.

Architecture

Originally a polygonal plan without towers. Two phases: 14th-century perimeter walls with a northern residential wing, and 15th-16th-century extensions (southern wings, a gate with a drawbridge). Dimensions approx. 30 x 35 m.
