Ruins of the Castle in Besiekiery

One of the most important defensive structures of the former Łęczyca Voivodeship - a brick fortress on a quadrangular plan (approx. 38 x 40 m) surrounded by a water moat, in the village of Besiekiery (Grabów commune).

History

The fortress was built around 1560 as a knightly seat founded by Mikołaj (Wawrzyniec?) Sokołowski, Voivode of Łęczyca. In 1597 it passed into the ownership of the Bishop of Warmia. In 1655 the starost Jan Szymon Szczawiński rebuilt it into a Baroque residence (the walls were banked up to form a mound/island and covered with plaster). After the 18th century it gradually fell into ruin.

Architecture

Three elements: a courtyard surrounded by a defensive wall, a residential building to the north, and the remains of a gate passage and tower to the south. The walls rose directly from the water on a stone foundation.

Practical information

Accessibility

The monument is in ruins and open to visitors. In 2010 clean-up works were carried out - the courtyard was uncovered, the moat was restored and filled with water; a new bridge leads to the ruins.
