Ruins of the Royal Castle in Inowłódz

The remains of a defensive castle erected during the reign of Casimir the Great, in the north-western part of Inowłódz, on Zamkowa Street.

History

The castle was built in 1356-1366; it served as an administrative seat and a defensive point on the border. Władysław Jagiełło bought it out before 1390 and expanded it, staying here many times. It was destroyed during the Swedish Deluge in 1657.

Architecture and condition

A quadrangular complex of approx. 32 x 48 m made of brick and sandstone, with two towers and L-shaped internal buildings. The relics of the full circuit of the outer walls, uncovered in the 1980s, have been preserved. Since 2013 it has housed, among others, the Communal Cultural Centre, a library and a Tourist Information Point.
