Ruins of the Castle in Drzewica

The ruins of a Gothic-Renaissance castle on the Drzewiczka River, in the southern part of Drzewica - one of the few examples of residential Gothic-Renaissance architecture in the Łódź region.

History

The castle was erected in 1527-1535 by Maciej Drzewicki, Archbishop of Gniezno. It combines Gothic features (high walls with loopholes, flanking towers, a double moat, a drawbridge - modelled on medieval castella) with Renaissance detail. In 1814 the complex burned down and was not rebuilt.

Condition

The full circuit of the defensive walls, four uncovered towers and two uncovered buildings in the courtyard have been preserved.
