Ruins of the Castle of the Dukes of Masovia in Ciechanów

The ruins of a brick lowland castle of the Dukes of Masovia in Ciechanów, currently the seat of the Museum of the Masovian Nobility.

History

The castle was founded around 1355 by Duke Siemowit III, expanded around 1370, and after 1420 transformed into a ducal residence. It was destroyed during the Swedish Deluge in 1657 and partly demolished at the beginning of the 19th century.

Architecture

The preserved perimeter walls form a rectangular plan (approx. 48 x 57 m) with two cylindrical corner towers to the south; in the western wall there is a gate with traces of a barbican. As part of the revitalisation (from 2010), a museum pavilion was erected.
