Ruins of the Castle in Sochaczew

The ruins of the castle of the Dukes of Masovia in Sochaczew, several hundred metres south of the market square, near Podzamcze Street and R. Traugutt Street.

History

Construction began in the mid-14th century under Duke Siemowit II. The castle was the seat of the Dukes of Masovia until 1476, when Sochaczew was incorporated into the Crown - it then served as an administrative centre and the seat of the starost. In 1608 a building disaster occurred due to the sliding of the embankment; the early 17th-century reconstruction was not completed. Burned down by the Swedes (1655), it was finally destroyed by Prussian artillery in 1794.

Architecture and condition

Originally made of brick on stone foundations, on a trapezoidal plan (approx. 35 x 30 m), with two towers. Mainly 18th-century relics have been preserved: the moat, the foundations of three wings and an embankment - archaeologically examined and secured.
