Ruins of the Castle of the Dukes of Masovia in Liw

The Gothic ruins of the castle of the Dukes of Masovia amid boggy meadows in the Liwiec valley, on the edge of the village of Liw (Liw commune). The last stronghold of the Duchy of Masovia.

History

In the 12th century a wood-and-earth stronghold existed here, and in the 13th century a wooden castellan fortress. The masonry castle was erected before 1429 on the initiative of Duke Janusz I the Elder (the builder Niclos). Extensions took place in 1526-1536 (under Duchess Anna) and 1549-1570 (under Queen Bona - the gate was rebuilt into a tower). Destroyed during the Deluge (1656) and the Great Northern War (1703) - it has been in ruins ever since. In 1782 a Baroque manor house for the chancellery was built alongside.

Today

The rebuilt tower and the Baroque manor house house a museum with a collection of militaria (the oldest exhibits from the 15th century); the Gothic cellars are accessible. Restoration was completed in 2019.
