Ruins of the Castle in Gołańcz

The ruins of the castle of the Pałuka family on Lake Smolary, on the north-eastern shore, east of the town of Gołańcz.

History

The castle most likely arose in the second half of the 14th century as the seat of the Pałuka family (first mention around 1383). In the 1470s it was taken over by the Grudziński family, and at the beginning of the 17th century by the Smogulecki family. In 1656, after a bloody battle, the Swedes destroyed the gate tower with artillery. The building was abandoned around 1834.

Architecture

A rectangular brick residential building on stone foundations (approx. 17 x 11 m), partly with a cellar, with a pointed-arch portal of profiled brick to the north. Later, defensive walls with a bastion and a quadrangular gate tower were added.
