Ruins of the Castle in Gozdów

The ruins of a defensive castle on the western bank of the Warta, in the village of Gozdów (Kościelec commune, Koło county).

History

The castle was erected before 1362 during the reign of Casimir the Great (making use of earlier 14th-century fortifications). It served military and administrative functions - among others, it was a place of councils during the war with the Teutonic Order in 1410. Besieged by the Swedes in 1655. In the 18th century Augustus III handed it over to the Bernardines, who tried to dismantle the building for material; the walls were also dismantled in the 20th century until post-war protection.

Architecture and condition

Made of brick on stone foundations, on a rectangular plan, with a cylindrical tower on a quadrangular base in the south-western corner. The western wall has been preserved; the northern and southern walls partly - the eastern one was destroyed by the erosion of the Warta.
