Castle Ruins in Wenecja

The ruins of a castle on a narrow isthmus between Lake Biskupińskie and Lake Weneckie, in the village of Wenecja (Żnin municipality), near the Narrow-Gauge Railway Museum.

History

The fortification was built in the 2nd half of the 14th century (probably before 1383) as the seat of Mikołaj Nałęcz, known as the "Venetian Devil". After 1400 it passed into the hands of the Archbishops of Gniezno, who between 1420 and 1436 expanded it into their main residence in the Pałuki region. It was demolished between 1479 and 1480.

Architecture

A castle on a square plan (33.5 m per side) with perimeter walls, a quadrangular corner tower and a house on the western curtain wall. Cylindrical proto-bastions adapted for artillery fire were placed at the corners of the outer wall. The full circuit of walls has survived up to ground-floor level.
