Ruins of the Teutonic Castle in Kowalewo Pomorskie

The fragmentarily preserved ruins of a brick Teutonic castle in Kowalewo Pomorskie, characteristic of the defensive architecture of the Chełmno Land.

History

Before the brick castle, a wooden Teutonic stronghold stood here (before 1231). The masonry fortress was built from around 1280 until the 1st half of the 14th century. Between 1278 and 1410 the castle served as a Teutonic commandery, and after the Second Peace of Toruń (1466) it functioned as a royal starosty until the First Partition of Poland. It was destroyed during the Polish-Swedish wars.

Condition

The best-preserved elements are a fragment of a gallery support and the pillar of the so-called dansker (a Teutonic sanitary tower). Archaeological research (2013-2015) clarified the location and dimensions of the castle.
